The Jahshaka team has a new toy and we are excited to share it with you! We have assembled our own Virtual Reality (VR) Rig to aid with Jahshaka development. Not only is it really cool to look at but, it provides the extremely high-performance speed needed to run Jahshaka effectively.
So for the average computer user, what exactly is it? It’s a custom PC built for general VR use. VR can be extremely taxing on one’s hardware and as such we opted to build our own PC from select hardware so that we can ensure we deliver the expected 90 frames per second (FPS) for a smooth, jitter free immersive experience in a virtual reality space.
What are the components ?
It’s a fairly modest, minimalistic build. It has an intel 7880k quad core CPU, 16GB of DDR4 RAM, and an all in one CPU Liquid Cooler and two AMD R9 390s in a crossfire configuration all housed in a sleek NZXT S340 mid-tower case. We are also using a Gigabyte LGA1151 GA-Z170X-GAMING 6 motherboard for maximum throughput.
How this benefit Jahshaka’s development?
Our new VR system will allow us to see how our application performs on high-end hardware as well as allowing us to streamline our build process and enabling artistic freedom without hardware constraints. Also, with Jahshaka having future support for several different head mounted displays (HMDs), it will enable us to easily switch or try different configurations.
Being a graphical application, with our own engine we can also test how our applications performs on different GPUs (whether it be debugging graphical bugs, testing drivers or taking advantage of vendor specific features) and slightly lower-end hardware by swapping components as needed.
Still not sure what the Virtual Rig is? Simply put, it’s one powerful PC.
